U3A
The 3rd Thursday of every month
2.00pm - 4.30pm
Offering Learning, Leisure
And Social Activities to
those who have retired.
WHAT IS THE U3A?
A national and international association of people who have retired and who believe that keeping a lively mind is essential to mental, physical and social well being. The U3A started in France in 1972 and came to Britain in 1982. The Market Drayton U3A was started in 1998.
WHO CAN JOIN?
Anyone who has retired.
WHERE ARE THE MEETINGS HELD?
The monthly meetings will be held in the Festival Drayton Town Centre, usually on the 3rd Thursday in the month, at 2pm. In the summer months the meetings take the form of visits. Details of forthcoming meetings and visits are displayed on the Library notice board and elsewhere in town. Special interest groups usually meet in members’ homes.
WHAT ABOUT QUALIFICATIONS?
No formal qualifications are needed to join and none are offered. The main aim of the U3A is to help keep Third Agers mentally and physically active in the company of alert like-minded people.
HOW IS IT ORGANISED ?
A Committee elected by the members, meets regularly to enable the local U3A to run smoothly. We are affiliated to the Third Age Trust, which is a registered charity and whose members receive the THIRD AGE NEWS.
WHAT DOES IT COST?
There is an annual subscription, which is currently £9.00, due on the 1st October. Members of a Special Interest Group pay any costs incurred by that Group.
HOW CAN I JOIN?
Come to the next meeting, to meet members and see what goes on.
The University of the Third Age is independent. It receives no Government support, nor does it seek any.
Everything it does is decided by its members, who determine all of its activities and who then provide the means and resources to put the plans into effect.
With people living longer and retiring earlier, the Third Age may well exceed the length of the working (second) age. It therefore becomes very important that an active lifestyle is maintained and also that isolation is resisted.
