THE MERCY at the Festival Drayton Centre

An amateur sailor applies to compete in the 1968 Golden Globe Race in an attempt to revive his failing business, only to find that he’s bitten off more than he can chew.

Despite some initial success selling his own navigation equipment, father and entrepreneur Donald Crowhurst sees his business begin to fail. Terrified of ending up like his own father, who lost all his money on investments that turned sour, he searches for ways to boost his income.

As a weekend sailor and inventor of aviation equipment, he decides to enter the prestigious Sunday Times Golden Globe Race, which involves a round-the-world solo yacht voyage and a handsome cash prize for the winner. His wife Clare and all his friends tell him he's a mad man, and urge the amateur sailor to rethink his plans. In a desperate plea to succeed, he pushes ahead, finds an investor and builds a yacht. But, as he hits the high seas, it doesn't take long for the inexperienced sailor to run into trouble and his dream is over. Faced with financial ruin and humiliation, is there any turning back?

Based on the remarkable true story that shocked the world, The Mercy is directed by the highly-acclaimed James Marsh (The Theory of Everything, All the Old Knives) and stars Academy Award Winner Colin Firth (Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Mary Poppins Returns) as Donald Crowhurst.
