Abel Selaocoe - Classical Music Series
Sunday 22nd March
South African cellist Abel Selaocoe is redefining the parameters of his instrument. Heavily influenced by South Africa and deeply rooted in classical music, Abel combines virtuosic performance with improvisation and singing. He typically creates programmes that highlight the links between Western and non-Western musical traditions.
He has led 100 cellos in African Song and played as soloist with both the BBC and Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestras.
Abel is the featured instrumentalist on the album and at the premier performance of Sir Karl Jenkins’ latest work Miserere (Oct/Nov 2019).
In Market Drayton, Abel will play JS Bach and contemporary Italian composer Giovanni Solima alongside African pieces telling stories about the trials and joys of motherhood, the effects of apartheid on young people, and a healing nation.
“It is rare to find as compelling a synthesis of explosive technical prowess and captivating powers of communication as that embodied by the cellist Abel Selaocoe.” Leon Bosch
