Sue Smith - Artist

Monday 6th May

- Monday 3rd June

Sue Smith - Artist exhibition at the Festival Drayton Centre

I have been drawing and painting since the age of four, although then it was mostly Popeye and Mickey Mouse.

During my early twenties I began to create and sell highly individual and colourful paintings, mostly executed in inks, but also including some striking pencil portraits. I exhibited widely during this time and became a sought-after artist in the burgeoning fantasy field. My work appeared in several magazines, and for some years I ran the art exhibitions at the national Science Fiction Conventions.

For a considerable time my painting took a back seat after our two children were born. But even during this hectic period I continued drawing, specialising in children's portraits, and had many commissions.

2004 saw a new and late flourish as I began to create very different pictures of buildings and rocks in the landscape, which then evolved into intricate paintings of trees, water and the natural world. The emphasis is on the contrast between textures, colour and light. Some themes that continue to fascinate are gnarled trees, water including reflections, and ramshackle buildings.  The finished works are executed in a variety of media, including acrylics, pen and ink, pencils and pastel. In 2005 I began exhibiting once more, gaining new and enthusiastic fans and in 2007 I was runner-up in The Artist magazine annual art competition. I was selected in 2008, 2009 and 2010 for the Keele Open and in 2012 for the Weston Park Open.

Since my retirement, I have been teaching Tai Chi and Qigong in several classes, looking after my three cats and maintaining a large terraced garden, together with carrying on painting
