CMS: Gamelan Sekar Patek
Sunday 10th November
Time: 3pm
A gamelan is a group of mostly percussion instruments playing traditional Indonesian music. Gamelan Sekar Patek, or ‘White Rose’, is based at York University and its dozen or so performers will play a mix of refined court music, popular pieces in the dangdut style, and new works by contemporary composers.
Xylophone-type instruments play a core melody, small kettle gongs embellish, drums keep the tempo, and hanging gongs give structural punctuation. With their evocative timbres they create layered textures of sound, according to Debussy, “able to express every shade of meaning.”
